Thank you for finding us. First, you will notice that this website has been kept deliberately simple. No bells or whistles and that is the way it should be. Our energy belongs with you, not trying to ornament this site. Dr. Sarno was unapologetically 'old school.' Just the facts. Just what works.

If you have read any of his books (and if not, please do so), you hopefully came away with a deep impression of the profound nature of mindbody medicine.

  • But, how does one apply that profound knowledge?
  • What are the steps to using Dr. Sarno’s clinical discoveries?

Journal Speak (from Nicole Sachs, a Dr. Sarno patient) is one huge part of the answer. Hopefully you know about Journal Speak. If not, you soon will. It is a radically open and honest approach to expressive writing. The purpose is to dive straight at the deeper issues behind all chronic conditions—even genetic disorders are rarely 100% causative. There are always confounding factors (such as epigenetics, lifestyle choices, repressed emotions, and hidden stress). If you dove into Journal Speak and wrote like a warrior, you probably made progress.

  • But, even then, many people lack one final, crucial element in true recovery. That element is moral support. Even Michael Jordan had a coach.

There is only so much that one can do alone. Fortunately, you are not alone. Group support, mentorship, and an outside perspective (even if it is just reminding you of what you already know) are priceless and, sadly, they are exactly what our medical system is poorly equipped to provide. Community, understanding, and support—the final, pivotal factors in your success (assuming that you are “doing the work”)—are why Maui Mindbody Medicine exists.

We are here and ready to work with you to end any chronic conditions. As mentioned, your first step should be to read what Dr. Sarno wrote about these conditions. Your second step should be to explore Nicole Sachs’ YouTube videos and podcasts so that you can start a daily practice of Journal Speak. All of that gets you to the door. Of course we are biased, but we recommend walking through that door with genuine support. That is the role of MMBM. We are patients as well. Even when the pain subsides, the quest never ends. Don’t go it alone.

That said, the name of this site is also very deliberate. Mind-body. As in mind+body, even though they are virtually inseparable. This means that if you have significant physical obstacles, those are also deserving of attention. Nutrition, for example, can obviously affect health. To our knowledge, poor nutrition has never been shown to cause the chronic conditions Dr. Sarno writes about (like back pain, for example). But poor nutrition is certainly an obstacle.

  • The “body” section of this website is dedicated to collecting helpful insights about physical health.
  • The “mind” section of this website, however, is 99%. Much of it assumes that you are not eating junk food regularly, that you are getting plenty of sleep, that you are reasonably active, and that you are not abusing substances.

We are physical beings, so physical health is foundational. That said, you cannot stretch, ice, heat, needle, fast, massage, adjust, or medicate your way out of chronic pain or chronic conditions. If you find relief from these modalities, you have probably experienced a temporary placebo effect, or you have temporarily mitigated symptoms without addressing the underlying causes.


As Dr. Shubiner states, “Why ‘manage’ pain when you can cure it?”


With a few rare exceptions, physical interventions are ultimately ineffective against mindbody ailments. Consequently, the chief focus of this website is the “mind” portion of “mindbody.”

If you choose to work with MMBM, you will receive whatever level of support necessary, even though we cannot do the work for you. Think of it like piano lessons: a weekly lesson is only meaningful if you’ve been diligently practicing at home each day.

  • Our guidance will provide you with checklists and daily “homework” to help you understand the psychological underpinnings of physical pain.
  • You will need to practice Journal Speak daily for any of this to work.
  • If you would like basic hypnosis sessions to boost your motivation and relaxation, we can offer that. There are many helpful ways to tap into the vast resources of your unconscious brain.
  • We will also offer moral support and direct attention to any skepticism holding you back. This is not a placebo effect. Your questions are essential. The whole process is completely transparent.
  • If you are interested, you can attend small group sessions to meet and support other people who may have different symptoms, but are in exactly the same situation as you.
  • No sessions will require you to share intimate personal details. Your privacy and sense of safety are paramount. In your journal, however, you will need to be radically honest—perhaps on a level you have never attempted.
  • Before working with us, you will need to read and reply to a basic statement about the core, defining principle of mindbody medicine.
